Just discovered this movie recently, I thought I had seen all tyrone power movies. This is one of his best yet little known and a real gem. So beautifully acted and the chemistry between Tyrone and Joan is palpable. It tells the story of a mans struggle to understand his part in WWII while he falls in love with a beautiful girl. Memorable performances by Power and Fontaine. Ill never understand why this man was never acknowledged as a great actor.
Tyrone Power's best early picture
- Michael Shea
This Above All is Tyrone Power's best early picture. He proves he is a sensitive, first-rate actor. Like Power I was and am a frustrated veteran regarding war. He did a great job portraying a blue-collar educated man that thought fighting Hitler was futile. I felt the cause was right but he didn't like fighting for the upper class in England. I can identify with that. I felt Joan Fontaine did a superb job as well. Thomas Mitchell as Monty was first rate as well. Alexander Knox did a great job as the pastor of the church who gave Tyrone guidance was also very good.I believe this movie gave a different slant towards war, especially since it was made during World War II.Two other Tyrone Power movies that deal with the horrors of war that are well done are The Razors Edge and The Sun Also Rises.
This Above All is a wonderfully emotional romance set against WWII England. It examines the motives for patriotism and heroism both from the point of view of a soldier who has been shattered by his first-hand experiences and that of a young idealistic aristocratic woman who has joined the auxillary forces, the WAFS. Tyrone Power gives a most sensitive and attractive performance as deserter, Clive Briggs, a well-educated blue collar soldier. Joan Fontaine is very good as the aristocrat Prudence Cathaway, who meets and falls in love with Clive in the dark on a blind date. In the background very often during the story can be heard and seen bombing attacks by Germany during England's darkest hour. Movies made during the WWII years tended to be emotionally loaded with romance and patriotism and this beauty has all of that impact. It's a really great wartime movie with a wonderful story enacted by two talented and super attractive young stars who are backed by a crew of terrific supporting players.
This Above All
I had never seen this movie before as I recall. It is a wonderful fillm. Joan Fontaine and Tyrone Power are a sizzling combo. I would certainly want this film for my collection. There are very many twists and turns in this story. The writing is superb. Even if one is not that fond of war films, this is not to be missed. There is a great balance achieved between action, romance and characters that served to make an interesting and important film.
Power and Fontain Give Glowing Performances
I think that this WWII drama is just what old time movies are about. Two great stars give emotionally charged performances that stay with you long after the movie ends. They are surrounded by wonderful supporting actors in this case especially Thomas Mitchell. Tyrone Power and Joan Fontain bring a lot of heart and intelligence to their portrayals. Production values script background music and cinematography are all superior. A very beautiful story, well told. An example of why people went to the movies regularly and maybe why TCM in keeping them on TV has remained so popular.
This Above All (1942)
- James Higgins
Well produced story of a conscientious objector (Tyrone Power) and his romance with the wealthy Joan Fontaine. Excellent Academy Award winning art direction and also nominated for cinematoghraphy, editing and sound.Great story, but I found it dragged a little in parts. Joan Fontaine is lovely, Tyrone Power is pretty good, he was never regarded as a great actor, because he isn't, but he isn't bad either.
Beautiful, underrated film
Tyrone Power gives one of his best performances in "This Above All" - and, had World War II not intervened - a performance that might have changed the trajectory of his career.Power plays a deserter from the British army who falls in love with a wealthy young woman, Prudence. She knows he has a secret but not what it is. Eventually she learns the story of what happened to him.The scene where they meet is one of the most beautiful in all film. They meet during a blackout, in complete darkness. Finally, a match is lit and you can see their faces. Gorgeous.
