"What cross do you bear?"
- Jeff Boston
Such brave men in this fine film, many of whom were like the doomed Pierre, "who saw the folly of the abject submission to the oppressor." I reasonably assume that a decade later the great "Stalag 17" paid homage to "The Cross of Lorraine" with one stunning scene. I was impressed with Kelly, who made this propaganda picture after America joined the war against godlessness (National Socialism in Europe and man-centered totalitarianism in Asia). He played a part in another propaganda piece years later ("Inherit the Wind") after Hollywood joined the war against God.

Great war film
- James Horton
Cross of Lorraine is one of the better war films released during WW2. I just gave a review of Assignment In Brittany, which is one my favorites but, this one is better. Great cast, including a rare dramatic role for Gene Kelly. Both of these films belong on DVD so more people can enjoy them. Hopefully, it'll be on again soon since I haven't seen it in a few years now.
THE CROSS OF LORRAINE

THIS IS TOPS AND SHOULD BE RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC ON DVD.
OH, DON'T HURT THAT GORGEOUS FACE!!!
WOW! What an excellent dramatic role GENE KELLY played in this movie!! I loved every minute of it! The emotions that GENE displayed and his facial expressions of pain were phenomenal and made this movie exciting and seem so real! And what a shocking and graphic scene where Peter Lorre kicks GENE in the face. I cringe with clinched teeth everytime I see it--it looked so incredibly real!! The anger GENE showed when the priest was shot, his spitting in the guards face out of anger and frustration, how he showed fatigue from being beaten and chained to the prison wall, and the facial expressions of pain he showed while in the infirmary recovering from his injuries. Then finally, his emotional breakdown and admission of fear after escaping the prison. These were the things that made this movie so worth watching. Then at the end, he regains his brave, tough confidence again and manages to fight off the Germans. This is a movie so worth seeing for anyone who loves seeing a very dramatic GENE KELLY, and a good war-time movie. In my opinion, GENE'S non-musicals are just as great and exciting as his musicals. Thank you TCM for airing this exceptional movie!!
I love this movie, Gene Kelly was great
