My Fathers small part in the film
- Bruce Jollimore
I enjoyed the film since I am a fan of all the actors in the picture. Arthur Kennedy is buried in Lequille, near Annapolis Royal, in the Annapolis Valley Nova Scotia. Also Raymond Massey is Canadian. My Father was with the artillery in the Canadian Army and landed in England around August, September 1940 just as the Battle of Britain was wrapping up and the Blitz was beginning. He was assigned to the British Army, complete with uniform to help with the air defense of London and surrounding areas. My Father didn't talk much about his experiences, but sometimes in the middle of a conversation He would drop a antidote or interesting story. One was about the time on his gun site that a film crew had gotten permission to film them in action for a film called " Desperate Journey". Dad said it was shot at night and that his gun crew were asked to wear German Helmets. Many years later I had the opportunity to watch the film on TCM and sure enough if you look close the men on the gun are wearing British tunics with German helmets. In one shot the muzzle blast lights up the site and the men are wearing ponchos over their uniforms.I did purchase a copy of the film since it contained footage of my father in action. Anti-aircraft defense was a dangerous business because of falling bombs, falling shell shrapnel and toxic fumes from the many fires. My Father contracted a serious lung condition that plagued him for the rest of his life because of the fires all around them.
Thank you, thank you for showing this wonderful film again. How exciting, fun. Terrific entertainment of the best kind. Clean, exciting, funny parts, great actors. I love this film. Keep on showing it, as well as other Ronnie and Errol films. Together, they are great. But I love them separately too. Raymond Massey was terrific too. I did not know he could speak German. What talented people indeed. I love TCM. Thank you so very much for these wonderful, timeless, classics.
Ronald Reagan and Errol Flynn fight the Nazis!
- Mary mcgarvey
This wonderfully fast moving and joking and kidding 1942 film is a pleasure to watch simply because there is never a dull moment. It appears that major Otto Baumeister played by Robert Hart is really speaking his own German even if a bit stiffly and too correctly. Errol Flynn is also portrayed as speaking German min response to a fellow reviewers' inquiry as to why he needed a German "girl" (who looked like a woman and trained nurse to me) to translate to the German police, I think it is obvious: best not that the Nazi police know a RAF pilot speaks and understands their language. The car chase scene with the two old Mercedes going through a fake Holland with windmills is a gas. Ronald Reagan with his cool California quips and smile though what Europeans thought the American GI'S were like. And that they become president is quite natural nicht wahr? That the nazis officers are portrayed as stumbling idiots I still don't understand. They were extremely sharp. The Japanese were never underestimated in American films! Perhaps it was to calm the American public into believing that the germans were essentially harmless and ignorant and easily duped. Or perhaps the Jews of Holkywood wished it were so? liked to look down on them? It sure looks absurd now when you consider how much they had achieved by 1942'amd how serious they were in wiping out European Jews. Enjoy the film for humor and plot and action and good looking actors!the German underground imposters who treat these pilots to a feast of schnitzel and so on.... Funny that the wife says to her husband in German, "careful or we all will go to a concentration camp" Then Errol Flynn translates this to his mates as "we are all going to wind up in prison!" Which they think is funny!!!
Great Wartime Movie
- Ge Gadwa
Desperate review is a great wartime movie. It has a great cast lead by future President Ronald Reagan and Errol Flynn, one of the most dashing actors in the history of Hollywood. Arthur Kennedy's character plays a critical role in the film as well.As the film opens you see banter between the crew showing they have a very good working relationship. However, the mission has several places where the crew can either take a more conservative, careful approach or a more high risk approach throwing caution to the wind. Errol Flynn's character is in favor of throwing caution to the wind. His approach generally results in casualties both for the enemy and for his own team. For example, Flynn's character decides to attach a German chemical plant. This is outside the scope of the mission. The crew causes great damage to the plant. But in the process one of the crew's members is shot and eventually dies from this wound. Arthur Kennedy's character is more conservative. He is willing to pass up some opportunities to attack the enemy to increase the likelihood of accomplishing the goal of the mission. The resolution to this conflict based on the outcome of the film is that the cautious approach is better. At the end of the movie Flynn has the choice to attack an additional target on the flight out of Germany. However, Arthur Kennedy's character has been shot and is in need of medical attention. Flynn decides not to attack the germans one last time and instead heads directly back to England. There is on very noticeable anomaly in the movie. Flynn's character is fluent in german. However, in a scene where a sympathetic german doctor is treating a member of the team for a gunshot wound, Flynn comes in contact with some Nazi police. He needs a german girl to translate for him with the police. But earlier in the film he could understand and speak German fluently. I don't understand this. But the movie was an exceptional film and a great period piece.
An excellent Errol Flynn WWII Adventure
- Clare Holman
When a bomber is shot down, it's crew is left with a "Desperate Journey" to reach freedom. While trying to avoid capture they also engage in some sabotage along the way. This film has many plot elements in common with a British film, "One of Our Aircraft is Missing", also released in 1942.
All the element's that make up a good movie are here in this one. A must see for classic movie fan's!
Nobody like Flynn.
- Frederick Willman
This film was indeed a morale builder for this writer when he was eight, as it was for his parents. '42 was indeed a dark year Flynn brightened the Home Front, as he did with his mighty "Objective Burma" in '45, several months before the war ended. He died almost 50 years ago in October '59, almost three years after Bogie; they remain irreplacable screen heroes.fbenjul

Just what the US needed in it's darkest times
- Rick Glowaki
This film was just what the US needed during it's darkest times- when the Japs and the Nazi's were running amok throughout the world and our forces were taking their lumps- to raise moral and give good entertainment. Flynn is Flynn, a consumate hero and all around true movie star. His supporting cast is especially strong as are the villians. This is a great, fast=paced, fun WWII action movie that is true to it's times.
